On the afternoon of Saturday, October 6th, Fireboats were dispatched to a sailboat that had overturned with people in the water. Fireboats 11-5 and 11-6 responded. Fireboat 11-6 came upon the scene and found that all parties were out of the water and the Sunfish Sailboat was being towed back to the Yacht Club. About an hour later a second call was dispatched for a sinking boat at Captains Quarters. Fireboat 11-8 as well as Command 11 responded. The boat was found to be totaly submerged. The owner was contacted and arrangements were made to raise the boat on Sunday morning. All units were cleared within an hour.
The Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire/Rescue is actively seeking new members. Members can be firefighters, EMT's or simply someone that wants to help the community. If you feel that you have that calling to help others, that is the person we would like to speak with. Please drop us a note on this page or submit an application at Bedford County Department of Fire and Rescue.
